At the Department of Transport (DfT), we aim to create a modern technologically advanced transport system that can bring lasting change to millions of people.
Transport touches the lives of everyone in the country. Across road, rail, air and sea, our transport networks affect homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and more. It’s how we deliver goods to our shops, get people to work and reunite with our loved ones.
Updating our transport systems is crucial to building a stronger economy that can work for everyone. It also means keeping people safe while they’re on the move. These are ambitious plans, and we need people from every skillset and background to shape the key decisions that will get us there.
You can play a key role in our future direction.
Department for Transport Groups
Who we are
The Department comprises five groups, each of which supports the delivery of Ministerial objectives into successful policy and delivery outcomes. We work in partnership with a wide variety of stakeholders and delivery partners, across the public and private sectors, to transform the UK’s transport networks, delivering improvements for citizens and the environment.
We sponsor and oversee planning and delivery of a major portfolio of nationally significant infrastructure projects. These include the delivery of the Intercity Express Programme, Thameslink and Crossrail, as well as the delivery of electrification and decarbonisation to meet the Government’s environmental targets.
We are responsible for the management of the current rail franchising system, ensuring that it delivers for both passengers and taxpayers. We are also planning for the future through the delivery of the once-in-a-generation reforms, emerging from the Williams Rail Review.
High Speed Rail and Major Projects Group
We sponsor and oversee planning and delivery of five major projects: each of which is critical to driving economic growth and productivity:
● the High Speed 2 programme
● Crossrail 2
● East-West Rail
● Northern Powerhouse Rail and
● the Department’s leadership of work at Euston Station.
In all of our work, we must balance the competing demands of innovation – identifying new models of building and planning railways - alongside the challenge of keeping major infrastructure projects on track.
In all cases, we work closely as the sponsors and clients of major delivery bodies, such as HS2 Ltd. The Group has one of the highest levels of people engagement in the Department and remains ambitious to develop its skills and expertise.
Aviation, Maritime, International and Security Group
We deliver priority cross-modal transport outcomes in partnership with the sector:
● ensuring the transport system is ready for the UK’s transition from the EU
● driving aviation policy including airports, environment, consumer protection, security and safety
● leading maritime policy including infrastructure, environment, security and trade
● ensuring security and safety of the transport network
● leading international negotiations with other governments and international transport organisations
● coordinating and leading DfT’s response to Covid-19
Roads, Places and Environment Group
We lead policy and delivery on a broad range of transport issues. These include regulatory matters relating to private motoring, freight and logistics and road and cycle safety, where we work closely with local authorities. We lead for the Department on the Future of Mobility.
We provide policy, guidance, and funding to English local authorities to help them run and maintain their road networks. We also provide investment in maintaining and operating around 4,300 miles of the motorway and trunk road network in England through Highways England.
Corporate Delivery Group
The Corporate Delivery Group brings together our expert professional teams across seven specialist directorates, ranging from HR to Digital and Governance to Communications and Group Property. It is this expert knowledge and skill set that enables the department to function.
One of the teams that has been recently established is the Portfolio and Project Delivery Directorate which aims to drive forward and support better delivery of the Departments Major Projects Portfolio.
